Finanzauto and Stadler: 20 Years of Rail Innovation with Cat® Engines

23 October 2025
For more than two decades, Finanzauto and Stadler have worked closely together on the development and integration of diesel and bimodal propulsion solutions that today run on the major rail networks of Europe and other countries around the world. A technological alliance that has driven innovation in the rail sector and positioned both companies as benchmarks in efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
20 Years of Collaboration and Joint Innovation
The relationship between Finanzauto and Stadler began in 2004, with the supply of 160 Cat® 3508 Engines for the French state-owned railway company (SNCF).
Since then, both companies have worked together on multiple platforms, evolving towards bimodal technologies and latest-generation engines that meet the most demanding environmental standards on the market (Stage V).
Key models developed in collaboration include:
EURO4001 – Pure diesel locomotive, primarily intended for freight transport.
EURODUAL – Bimodal platform powered by a Cat C175 Engine, capable of operating in both electric and diesel modes. Present in countries such as Germany, Austria, Türkiye, France and Scandinavia.
EURO9001 – Stadler’s latest development, featuring two Cat C32 Engines, delivering up to 9 MW in electric mode and 2 MW in diesel mode, providing exceptional flexibility across European corridors.
EUROLIGHT – Locomotives for mixed traffic (freight and passenger) with diesel and bimodal versions equipped with Cat Engines. Finanzauto has adapted the engines to meet emissions requirements and facilitate maintenance.
Locomotives in Finland – Locomotives powered by Cat C32 Engines delivering 950 kW, designed to operate in extreme cold conditions (-40 °C) and on tracks with reduced loading gauges. Finanzauto developed compact and robust aftertreatment solutions adapted to the Nordic environment.
KiwiRail (New Zealand) – Freight locomotives powered by Cat C175 Engines, adapted to narrow loading-gauge tunnels and demanding operating conditions. Finanzauto collaborated on the redesign of the aftertreatment system, installing it inside the diesel compartment in record time while optimising space, weight and efficiency.
More Than a Distributor: Engineering, Integration and Global Support
Finanzauto’s role goes far beyond engine supply.
As the official Caterpillar distributor in Spain, Finanzauto provides comprehensive engineering and integration services, actively participating in the development, validation and after-sales support of each railway project.
This includes everything from adapting engines to reduced loading gauges and designing specific aftertreatment systems, to optimising solutions for extreme climates, such as the -40 °C conditions encountered in Nordic projects.
In addition, Caterpillar’s global coverage provides Stadler with international after-sales support, ensuring the availability of parts and technical assistance in any country where the locomotive operates.
“The relationship between Stadler and Finanzauto dates back more than 20 years. Finanzauto not only distributes Caterpillar engines, but also participates throughout the development, integration and validation process. Their responsiveness, technical support and ongoing collaboration are key to the success of our locomotives.”
— David Blanco Rodríguez, Head of Mechanical Systems at Stadler Valencia
